Site Boundary Response

The new TCAT Knoxville campus
enhances the institution’s visibility from
both its main entrance on Liberty Street
and the nearby Interstate 40/75, which
passes by the campus. This screen
wall acts as both an opportunity for a
site boundary response and a campus promotional element. The screen wall
conceals the institution’s older mechanic
shops behind it. The orthogonal masses
and clean lines from the materials provide
a modern aesthetic, which reflects
the highly technical and progressive
academic work occurring on the inside.
Creating such a prominent signage feature allows for the campus to gain more attention and it represents a model of the high craft and progressive learning opportunities throughout the technical training programs and facilities at TCAT.
For each of the three options, the concepts of movement, translucency and the slightest of transparency are carried through the design as the guiding concepts. These concepts play a huge part in the wall catching the eyes of a passer by on the interstate and main road, adjacent to the site. The visual from the lenticular pattern effect in options 01 and 03 specifically, creates the perception of movement and draws your attention to the site.
All three options allow for one to see the form of the massive truss holding up the screen wall. This creates a level of building honesty, which does not conceal how the design is assembled. Option 01 incorporates a series of powder coated, perforated steel fins that are bent outwardly at an angle, so as to draw the attention of those passing by. The lettering is mapped on the fins, so as you move by the signage, the monolithic text becomes clear. Option 02 incorporates the screen wall as a translucent, fritted polycarbonate feature. Option 03 incorporates a series of galvanized steel pipe fins and has the monolithic text affixed slightly beyond the fins, to create a seamless visual in front of the lenticular movement pattern.
