Serenity
Timescape: Columbarium | 2024
M.Arch | Prof. Hansjörg Göritz

Through the use of phenomenological and sensational qualities of place making, architecture is used as the foundation for testing the personal experience of time, in terms of capturing the momentary sensations of healing in nature and anticipation of overcoming grief. Being immersed in nature draws us to the present. On this 1.25 mile journey to a columbarium, solemness and memory of passed life are dealt with, but they are greeted by nature’s life-giving serenity and nurturing ability to aid in overcoming grief. Here one can be still in the present, reflect and even celebrate a life prior to and after death. Through the combination of frame capturing and immersion in nature, this space will provide a portal to remembrance and the serenity of the present.

Thesis:

When we go through grief, we spend so much time anchoring ourselves to the past and projecting our thoughts forward to futures we hope for, that we miss out on the stillness of the present. This can force us to have a longing to convene with nature, in order to be still and bring ourselves back into the now. This is where we find serenity.

Hypothesis:
If time and space are conceptually and perceptually tethered to one another, then...

Time is the tool for evoking facilitating experience, anticipation and understanding of space through mental and sensoral stimulation. The phenomenological and sensational qualities of architecture are direct influencers of this notion.

key terms: conceive v. perceive, manipulation, flexibility, trajectorism, futuring, prospection, episodic memory, phenomenology v. sensation
Analysis:
Experience of time is segmented and authentically based on state of mind & soul within an certain moment.

Anticipation of time is fluid through sensory cues, episodic memory and mental construction of future scenarios, determines one’s over or underestimation of time passage in a moment.

Time is a tool - it is quantifiably progressive and available in all instances, but can become a completely useless tool due to one’s experience, in the moment.

Synthesis:
Time is the tool for creating a momentary, sensoral experience and architecture is the means by which to test this.

When we go through grief, we spend so much time anchoring ourselves to the past and projecting our thoughts forward to futures we hope for, that we miss out on the stillness of the present. This can force us to have a longing to convene with nature, in order to be still and bring ourselves back into the now. This is where we find serenity.

Spatial Concept:
Time spent in nature allows us to reconnect to the present.

Through the combination of frame capturing and immersion in nature, sensory cues, this space provides a portal to remembrance and serenity of the present. Light and darkness with in the space allow for a spatial experience from expansion to compression to (re)expansion.
