Unity of Form & Variety of Perspective
Furniture Design | 2022

Unity of form and variety of perspective were the main concepts that drove the design and form making of this stool. The stool is meant to activate change and foster agency in a space depending upon the user’s preference for how it is positioned. No matter how the stool is positioned, it appears different than before.

The white oak and walnut pieces were formed and joined to complete the base so that the long grain of the wood flows through the entirety of the stool. The form of the stool is quite complex, however, the fabrication methods used were quite simple.

The stool is constructed of 36 laminated pieces of white oak and walnut hardwood. All of the pieces, once laminated, were combined to make the 12 members that form the sculptural, structural base. Each of those members were joined together through the use of a mortise and tenon joinery, specifically wooden dominoes joined into corresponding pre-drilled holes. All of the wood working to form each of the wooden members was done through the combined use of the jointer, planer, table saw, chop saw, and Festool domino joiner.
