Massing & Planning
Professional Work: bma

The Hicks House is a private residence located in West Knoxville, along the Tennessee River. Two tall, slender masses frame the front entrance. Tiered roof masses, clerestory and ribbon windows allow for one’s eye to flow across the form seamlessly, and nestles the home in the landscape of rolling hills and the river beyond. The division of public versus private spaces is made by a slim, structural feature wall slicing through the entirety of the mass. This provides a clear distinction of space on both the exterior and the interior.

Major spatial requests were for there to be an excess of space for entertaining guests, and for the private spaces to be as separated as possible from the public area. The first request was accomplished by providing the living and dining spaces with high ceilings and an abundance of natural light with full height curtain walls and clerestories that wrap around each volume. Due to the dramatic topography change, a basement level was add to provide more space for entertainment and create a secondary outdoor recreation space with a pool.

The second request was accomplished by dividing the massing into three units - support, public and private. A large feature wall was then introduced, which acts as a spine between the public and private spaces. The division between the public and support spaces was accomplished by implementing a mudroom and other interstitial spaces.
